What is Spiritual Wellness as a peer?

Overview:

One-day curriculum for peer recovery coaches to explore spiritual wellness in recovery, reflect on personal beliefs and biases, and practice supporting diverse faith and belief pathways with compassion, openness, and appropriate boundaries.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define spiritual wellness and its role in SUD recovery, resilience, and well-being.
  • Distinguish spirituality vs. religion and how each may influence recovery.
  • Identify shared values across spirituality, religion, and recovery (honesty, humility, love, courage, service, gratitude, compassion, integrity, responsibility, hope).
  • Describe the peer role in supporting spiritual wellness with clear professional boundaries (no imposing beliefs).
  • Recognize & manage personal spiritual/religious/cultural/lifestyle bias (self-reflection, active listening, respectful questions, avoid assumptions, seek supervision, stay open).
  • Support diverse belief systems respectfully (including religious, spiritual, atheist/agnostic, Muslim, LGBTQ+, and others).
  • Meet people where they are and use communication skills grounded in compassion, empathy, acceptance, and respect.
  • Know when to consult supervision/additional support when differences or ethical concerns affect the peer relationship.
  • Use self-care practices that support spiritual wellness and professional effectiveness.
